Dear Greetings,

Exactly 11 months and one day ago, Columbia was abuzz with “Evolution of the African American Spiritual” presented by Odyssey at the Second Missionary Baptist Church. The combination of beautifully narrated American history with soulful Spiritual left everyone very emotional, and grateful that we live in a town filled with such talented artists.

It is time to continue the journey. Singers Marques Jerrell Ruff and Jolie Rocke, with narrator Maya C. Gibson and pianist Brandon A. Boyd, have brought together other musicians, including conductor R. Paul Crabb with the singers from University of Missouri, Lincoln University, and Prairie View A & M University Concert Chorale, to present the sequel to last year’s “That Promised Land,” to “Freedom Bound.”

Last October, we filled the sanctuary at the Second Missionary Baptist Church (see photo):

If you do not have a ticket already, I highly recommend your purchase in advance, and plan to be at the venue at least 30 minutes before the performance. Parking in downtown is difficult, and with the Roots & Blues – more traffic is surely guaranteed.

“Freedom Bound: The Evolution of the African American Spiritual” will take place on Friday, September 27 at 7 p.m., First Baptist Church at 1112 E Broadway in downtown Columbia. Tickets are available online [CLICK HERE] or at the door. Doors open earlier at 6pm. Concession and guest artist’s CDs will be available for purchase before the concert and during the intermission. Reception will follow by the Broadway entrance.

I sincerely hope you will be able to make this event, especially if you missed joining us last year. Words really do not do justice to the deep and electrifying experiences we felt at the last year’s event – but it is something you would want to experience together in a live performance.

Sincerely,

Ayako Tsuruta
