All are welcome to a free showing of the documentary “1948: Creation and Catastrophe,” at 6:30 pm, Tuesday, October 15 in the Friends Room of the Columbia public library.

This even-handed, moving film features reflections from Palestinians and Israelis who lived in the region during the establishment of Israel.  To settle the current conflict it’s vital to better understand that event– both celebrated for creating a safe home for Jews after the Holocaust, and condemned, as a catastrophe in which hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled their homeland.

At 6 o’clock, llght refreshments will be offered with a discussion after the film. For more about the event, co-sponsored by Mid-Missourians for Justice in Palestine, the Mid-MO Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) and Mizzou Students for Justice in Palestine– call 573-449-4585.

About the Documentary:

The Nakba is the historic and continuing expulsion of Palestinians from their homes and lands in historic Palestine in 1948. We will screen the groundbreaking film—1948 Creation and Catastrophe—directed by Andy Trimlett and produced by Dr. Ahlam Muhtaseb, with rarely seen footage and remarkable interviews with both victims and Zionist perpetrators of the violent events of 1948. Dr. Muhtaseb is Professor of Media Studies and Director of the Center for Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies at California State University, San Bernadino. Andy Trimlett is a documentary filmmaker with a Master’s degree in Middle East Studies from the University of Washington.
Through riveting and moving personal recollections of both Palestinians and Israelis, 1948: Creation & Catastrophe reveals the shocking events of the most pivotal year in the most controversial conflict in the world. It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. This documentary was the last chance for many of its Israeli and Palestinian characters to narrate their first-hand accounts of the creation of a state and the expulsion of a nation.
